Fed up with Los Angeles and typecasting, Myra Marlowe leases a house in the tiny New England hamlet of Beaver Haven. She is working on her autobiography and is seeking small-town quiet, but dealing with nosy, overzealous neighbors is cutting into her writing time and shattering her peace. In an attempt to shoo them all away and retain her privacy, Myra invents a mad, slightly homicidal sister, “Sadie” who occasionally escapes from her guest room long enough to scare away visitors. The ruse works well, at first, but complications result when the local handyman discovers clothing buried in the backyard and the officious ladies decide it is up to them to try and save poor Sadie, who must have come to harm.
